After arriving at the gallery, I was surprised to find a variety of fairly modern paintings. I was pleased as modern art speaks to me a lot more than traditional paintings of landscapes and portraits. The one main picture that struck me was one called The Dreaming. It looks like a collection of oval shapes, all linked to one another in a spiral pattern. The spiral is achieved by the ovals getting larger as they leave the centre as well as the colours going from primary into more like tone shades. The dark background contrasts to the colours well and makes the picture seem more magical. My first interpretation of the picture was that it looked a lot like a dance floor with the spot lights shining. After reading Rebecca Partridge’s comments on the painting, I was interested to see that she saw these strange shapes and colours in her dreams as a child. After experiencing a similar experience, only with large spray of coloured dots merging together, I felt a connection. The overlapping of the ovals seem to me as if they’re all the possible dreams and meanings that come to us as we’re asleep, unaware of the outside world, in our own little vortex.
